Please provide a complete RFQ package for the NPI or pilot build:

BOM with manufacturer names, full manufacturer part numbers (MPNs), reference designators, quantities per board, and fitted / not-fitted status.
Gerber and drill files, PCB specifications, and stack-up where PCB fabrication is included.
Pick & Place / Centroid data, including board side and component rotation.
Assembly drawings showing polarity, connector orientation, and special assembly requirements.
NPI or pilot quantities to be quoted and target delivery schedule.
Expected production quantities or forecasts, if available.
Applicable PCB, BOM, and assembly document revisions, including any build variants.
Material supply model: turnkey, partial-turnkey, or consigned.
Customer-supplied material list and mandatory sourcing restrictions, where applicable.
Known issues from earlier builds, their current status, and any pending changes.
Special assembly, inspection, mechanical, labeling, or packaging requirements, where applicable.
Firmware programming required: Yes / No.
ICT or functional testing required: Yes / No. Please describe the required test type and scope.
Estimated programming and testing time per board, if known.
Programming tools and test fixtures: customer-supplied or to be quoted, if required.
Required pilot-build records, reports, and production release criteria, where specified.

Firmware and software files are not required for the initial quotation. If programming or testing is required, please describe the scope and whether the necessary tools and fixtures will be customer-supplied. If fixture development is required, please provide the test requirements for a separate quotation.

Production firmware, programming instructions, and detailed test procedures and acceptance criteria can be provided after order confirmation and must be confirmed before the relevant production activities begin.

The quotation is based on the submitted revisions and agreed manufacturing scope. Subsequent changes may affect pricing or the delivery schedule.

What Is NPI PCB Assembly?

New Product Introduction (NPI) is the manufacturing stage between prototype validation and repeat production.

During NPI, PCB and BOM revisions, approved components, sourcing, assembly documentation, programming, functional testing, inspection requirements, and production documentation are reviewed according to the project requirements.

The objective is to establish a manufacturing process that can be repeated consistently before larger production quantities are released.

From Prototype to NPI and Pilot Production

NPI normally begins after the product has reached an appropriate level of prototype validation.

Issues identified during prototype PCB assembly can be reviewed before the next build so that PCB revisions, BOM changes, sourcing, programming, testing, and manufacturing documentation can be updated where required.

A typical manufacturing transition may follow:

Prototype Build → Engineering Review → NPI Build → Pilot Production → Process Review → Production Release → Repeat Manufacturing

The exact sequence depends on the product, development stage, validation requirements, and expected production volume.

Preparing the Pilot Build

Before the build, we confirm the manufacturing revisions, approved components, assembly requirements, firmware, test procedures, and available fixtures.

Known issues from earlier builds should be included in the RFQ, together with their current status. Requirements that remain unresolved are reviewed before the affected production step.

The pilot plan defines the build quantity, applicable inspections and tests, records to be collected, and the items requiring customer confirmation.

Reviewing Results Before Production Release

After the pilot build, the review may cover assembly observations, inspection and test results, process issues, material concerns, and required document updates.

Any corrective actions or changes are assigned for review and approval. The applicable manufacturing documents are updated before the next build.

Production release follows the agreed acceptance requirements and approval process. A completed pilot run alone does not replace customer design validation or product qualification.

BOM & Supply Chain Review During NPI

A design can be electrically complete while still containing sourcing risks that may affect production.

During NPI, BOM and supply chain review may include:

Manufacturer lead time
Lifecycle status
Obsolete or NRND components
MOQ / SPQ
Reel, tray and packaging requirements
Allocation risk
Approved manufacturer / AVL requirements
Long-lead-time components
Second-source availability

Components that are practical for a prototype build may not always be suitable for repeat production due to availability, lifecycle, lead time, MOQ, or cost.

Where appropriate, potential second-source or alternative components can be reviewed. Alternative components require customer review and written approval before purchase or use.

Programming and functional testing should be considered before repeat production begins.

For customer-specific functional testing, our engineering team can review the test procedure, test points, operating conditions, required measurements, communication interfaces, programming requirements, and pass / fail criteria.

Where required, a production test fixture can be designed and built according to the agreed test method.

Fixture development scope and applicable NRE or development costs are reviewed before implementation.

NPI & Pilot Production Quantities

There is no fixed quantity that defines every NPI or pilot production build.

The appropriate quantity depends on product complexity, development stage, validation requirements, expected design changes, functional testing, component availability, production forecast, and the planned production ramp.

An NPI project may begin with a relatively small engineering build and progress through pilot production before repeat manufacturing quantities are released.

If future production quantities are known, please include them in the RFQ. Prototype, NPI, pilot, and production quantities can be evaluated separately because material purchasing, setup, testing, fixtures, process controls, and production planning may differ at each stage.

What is the difference between prototype PCB assembly and NPI?

Prototype PCB assembly is primarily used to build and evaluate an early-stage design.

NPI focuses on preparing the product and manufacturing process for controlled production. This can include BOM review, sourcing, DFM, process setup, programming, functional testing, manufacturing documentation, and pilot production.

Do we need a pilot run before production?

Not every project requires the same production sequence.

The need for a pilot run depends on product complexity, design maturity, testing requirements, expected production volume, manufacturing risk, and customer requirements.

Can you support component alternatives during NPI?

Yes. We can review component availability, lifecycle status, lead time, package compatibility, and potential second-source components.

Alternative components require customer review and written approval before purchase or use.
