PCB Assembly Cost FAQ
What files are required for a PCB assembly quotation?
Typical files include a BOM, Gerber files, pick-and-place data, and assembly drawings.
PCB specifications, mechanical drawings, whether programming or functional testing is required, estimated test time per board where applicable, and other available manufacturing information may also be helpful for the initial quotation.
Why is prototype PCB assembly more expensive per board?
Prototype quantities normally have a higher unit cost because engineering preparation, stencil preparation, SMT setup, programming setup, component purchasing, inspection, and other production costs are distributed across fewer boards.
The basic manufacturing process itself may still be similar to a larger production run.
Is the PCB assembly process different for 10 pcs and 10,000 pcs?
Not necessarily.
The fundamental PCBA manufacturing process can remain similar for 10, 100, 1,000, or 10,000 boards.
The major pricing differences normally come from setup cost allocation, component purchasing quantities, production efficiency, material utilization, testing requirements, and other manufacturing overhead.
Why does component cost change at higher quantities?
Component pricing can change with purchasing quantity due to distributor price breaks, MOQ, SPQ, packaging quantities, and current supply conditions.
Larger orders may also allow purchasing by full reel, tray, or standard package quantity.
However, the actual cost depends on the individual component and current market availability.
Can you quote multiple production quantities?
Yes.
For projects that may move from prototype into production, providing several quantities such as 10, 100, 1,000, and 10,000 pcs allows us to evaluate how the cost structure changes at each volume.
Can DFM review help reduce PCB assembly cost?
DFM review can identify potential manufacturing issues before production.
Depending on the design, this may help reduce unnecessary rework, improve panel utilization, simplify assembly, or identify manufacturing requirements that could affect production cost.
Can you help find alternative components?
Yes, depending on the component and project requirements.
Potential alternatives can be reviewed when a component is obsolete, difficult to source, has a long lead time, or creates unnecessary BOM cost.
Any controlled BOM substitution should be approved before implementation.
Can you help modify the PCB layout if a component needs to be replaced?
Yes. If a specified component is obsolete, unavailable, has a long lead time, or does not have a suitable pin-to-pin replacement, PCB layout changes may be required to use an alternative component.
Depending on the project and available design files, our engineering team can review the proposed replacement and support PCB layout modifications where required.
This may include:
Footprint changes
Pinout-related routing changes
Placement adjustments
Changes to surrounding passive components
Connector or mechanical clearance adjustments
PCB routing modifications
For IC replacements, a similar function or specification does not necessarily mean the new component can be used directly. Pinout, package, power requirements, surrounding circuitry, communication interfaces, thermal requirements, and other electrical characteristics may need to be reviewed.
If a suitable pin-to-pin replacement is not available, we can evaluate whether a PCB layout modification or additional circuit changes are required.
